Help Recover History: Oral Histories on Augusta’s Forgotten 1970 Riot
After the unexplained death of a teenage boy in the Richmond County jail a riot erupted. In the end, six men were dead, shot in the back by police. At least 50 businesses burned and the next day Augusta’s streets were filled with U.S. National Guardsmen.
These events are part of a larger project aiming to collect the memories and perspectives of Augustans on what lead to the riot, what happened during it and what changed as a result. We are looking for personal as well as communal stories. We look for understanding. For more information, please contact Sea Stachura.
